NORTH AYRSHIRE 200M FEB 09
Swimmers from Helensburgh Amateur Swimming Club were in action again at the North Ayrshire 200 Meet held at Auchenharvie Leisure Centre. They were against teams from North Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, Ren 96, Dumfries, West Dunbartonshire, Milngavie & Bearsden and City of Glasgow to name but a few and it was their first time at a competition where 8 lengths (200m) was the minimum distance for swimmers. Amy had done very well achieving qualification for every 10yrs 200m event.
Amy got the day off to a great start with a terrific swim in the 200m Butterfly, finishing 3rd taking a whopping 32.57 seconds off her PB, followed by 6th in the 200m Individual Medley taking 14.80 seconds off her PB. The afternoon saw Isobel in action her favourite stroke 10yrs 200m Breaststroke, she pulled out all the stops to finish 5th with Amy 6th and Christy 8th with a hat trick of PB’s from the girls.
The second day started with Amy in the 200m Backstroke, it wasn’t her best performance of the competition yet amazingly she still managed to finish 5th and set a new PB and she was back on form in the 200m Frontcrawl with an excellent well paced swim, kicking strongly in the last 25m to finish 5th taking 7.11 seconds off her PB, 11th Christy.
Adam the youngest of the HASC swimmers at just 9 years produced an excellent swim in the 10yrs 200m Backstroke, finishing 4th and setting a new time. Duncan made travelling the distance for only one race worthwhile, swimming an excellent race in 11yrs 200m Backstroke finishing 3rd and taking 18.15 seconds off his PB.
Jon was given late notification of a swim in the 11yr 400m Individual Medley and he certainly went for it taking a massive 47.99 seconds off his PB finishing 4th in his age group and was13th in the 200m freestyle.
Amy, Isobel and Duncan have all achieved West District consideration times and should be very proud of their achievement as it has been a number of years since anyone from HASC has achieved this.
Swimmers – Duncan Anderson, Adam Findlay, Jon Law, Christy Morrison, Amy McNeill, Isobel Thwaites.

What a great experience! A team of swimmers from Helensburgh Amateur Swimming Club qualified for the City of Glasgow, 2 day, long course competition which was held at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre and what a facility, 10 lanes, 50m pool, with warm up cool down pool separately, if only Helensburgh had such a facility!
Swimming Club’s had entered this competition from all over Scotland and this was HASC’s first time at a long course competition in quite a few years. The swimmers however had been attending regular training sessions at Stirling University’s 50m pool and were therefore used to the distance.
There was plenty of excitement from the swimmers on Saturday as they settled down into their new surroundings. Amy put in great performances in the 10yrs & under 50m Back and 50m Free to finish 4th and 5th respectively a superb achievement out of a field of 60 swimmers. Duncan, Jon, Michael, Ben, Christy and Isobel all swam brilliantly in their heats and achieved PB’s in all of their events during Saturday.
Sunday saw them get off to an even better start with Duncan swimming a brilliant race to finish 1st in the 11yrs 100m Backstroke. This was followed by Amy putting in two exceptional performances to finish 2nd in the10 & under 100m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly. Isobel in her favourite stroke, the 50m Breaststroke put in a terrific performance to finish 4th out of 60. There were some outstanding performances from Ben, Michael, Jon and Christy throughout the day and many PB’s shattered along the way.
It was 2 long days of competition for the swimmers however considering this was their first taste of long course competition they all did extremely well. They all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the competition and hopefully this will now inspire them to work even harder in their training at Stirling.
